Read Through the Old Testament in 2008

On December 1st, 2007, we begin a chronological reading of the Old Testament as a church family. This will be a 14 month program, concluding on January 31st, 2009 (yes, 2009!). We’ll start by reading the first few books of the Bible – Genesis and Exodus - as well as the book of Job, which was written around that time. We’ll continue using a devotional format aimed at hearing from God daily and responding to his leading:
Bible
  • Scripture – write out a verse or two that speak specifically to you today.
  • Observation – make a note of what you observe in the text.
  • Application – write out how God’s Word applies to your life.
  • Prayer – write out a prayer of response to what God has said to you.
You can do this by yourself, with your family, with some friends or as part of your Life Group. As you make your time with God and his Word the priority of your day, you will experience a tangible ‘washing of the Word’ in your heart and life.

When tempted by the devil Jesus quoted an Old Testament Scripture and said, “People need more than bread for their life; they must feed on every word of God (Matt.4:4. NLT).” God’s Word, as revealed in the Bible, is to be our ‘daily bread’. In the same way that we need food every day to be healthy and strong so we need to daily feed upon God’s Word to us. Then as we apply it to our lives we are adding exercise to healthy food, which results in good health and spiritual fitness.

Imagine the difference in your life if you could feed daily on the wisdom of the ages! God’s words are alive and powerful, able to not only feed your soul, but to renew your thinking and to give you insight for every aspect of your life and ministry.

We would like to challenge you to make a commitment to reading through the entire Old Testament during the coming year. We’ll be doing this as a church family and we believe it will be a catalyst to God doing some incredible things in our lives and our church.

As each of us establishes the habit of hearing and applying God’s Word every day, we will experience the joy of knowing God better and of becoming healthy and strong disciples of Jesus Christ. Think how better the New Year will be because of that!
